secularism first

Wir freuen uns ja schon auf die Rezensionen von Roys "Secularism Confronts Islam" in den einschlägigen Publikationen hierzulande.

Der Economist hat schon mal zusammengefasst:

"His central contention is that “[the] problem is not Islam but religion or, rather, the contemporary forms of the revival of religion.”

"Mr Roy rejects all of these contentions and, along the way, has some fun at the expense of those who have created an Islamic exception. Why attack only Islam as discriminatory? Should we not stigmatise the Catholic Church for not allowing women to be priests? Why not ask Jews to give up the notion of the “chosen people”? More seriously, he suggests it might be honest, though hardly honourable, to admit that Islam is singled out because it is the religion of immigrants and because it is associated, in entirely negative ways, with the Middle East."

"In truth, conservative Muslims view sex and family in essentially the same way as conservative Christians and Jews."

Man muss wohl anmerken, dass es dem Franzosen Roy um die europäische Debatte geht - zum sog. Nahostkonflikt schweigt er sich anscheinend aus. Allerdings spricht er sich für den säkularen Rechtsstaat und gegen moralisch-fundamentalistische Wertsetzungen aus, was bei vielen Iranern, Saudies usw. gut ankommen dürfte. (die hedonistisch veranlagten Saudies fahren ja zum Party machen immer ins benachbarte Ausland - link verbasselt, tss)

btw: auf in die näxte Runde von *Wer oder was ist eigentlich antideutsch*? (In den comments finden sich schöne Beispiele dafür, dass man den Begriff Rassismus endgültig entsorgen sollte und nur noch mit Balibar von Rassismus ohne Rassen (Kulturalismus) reden sollte.)
